While most of us have experienced dry skin or a pimple here and there at some point in our lives, rosacea is a lesser known skin condition that can be triggered by a wide range of factors and which manifests itself in the form of a distinct red flush on the skin. Below, we have uncovered everything that you need to know about rosacea, including the causes, symptoms and risk factors, as well as the products from Secret Skin that you can use for rosacea-prone skin.

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition that manifests itself in the form of redness or flushing on the forehead, cheeks and chin along with visible veins, enlarged nose, irritation in the eye and a burning sensation on the skin that can cause it to feel hot and tender. It can also present in the form of small, pus-filled bumps on the surface of the skin that are often mistaken for acne. The signs and symptoms of rosacea can flare up for a few weeks or months and then go away, mostly with targeted treatment that is prescribed by a skincare professional.

Causes:

While the exact cause of rosacea is still largely undiscovered, it is believed to be triggered by an overactive immune system and environmental stressors. Contrary to popular belief, rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene and is not contagious. Some of the common symptoms of rosacea include hot drinks and spicy foods, red wine and other alcoholic beverages, extreme tempatures, exercise, drugs that dilate blood vessels (including some blood pressure medications) and some cosmetic, skin or hair care products.

Risk Factors:

While anyone can develop rosacea, the ones most likely to exhibit signs and symptoms of rosacea are women over the age of 30, those with sensitive skin and those with a family history of rosacea.

Treatment:

Since rosacea can be tricky to self-diagnose and treat at home, we highly recommend visiting a certified professional who will be able to prescribe a custom treatment plan for you. If you’re looking for product recommendations, here are some that we love (and recommend using!) for skin that is prone to rosacea:
