Slugging - A Clean Take On This Viral Skincare Trend - Secret Skin

Slugging - A Clean Take On This Viral Skincare Trend

There is a skincare trend that has resurfaced recently amongst skincare buffs and highlights slathering your face in petroleum jelly as the final step of your nighttime skincare ritual. Known as 'slugging', it is meant to prevent moisture loss and keep the skin nourished and hydrated.

WHAT DOES SLUGGING MEAN?

The term ‘slugging’ comes from the idea that after you apply petroleum jelly as the final step of your PM skincare ritual, your face looks shiny and slimy - not unlike a slug. Slugging originates from the world of K-Beauty where dewy, glass-like skin reigns supreme and coating your face in petroleum jelly is one of the most tried-and-tested ways to help you achieve that.

HOW DOES SLUGGING WORK?

Put simply, slugging involves coating your face in petroleum jelly or a moisturizer to help give it a generous dose of moisture and allow it to heal. This also helps the skin to lock in moisture and prevent water loss and give it that supple, plump look and feel that we crave. Slugging also enables your skin to repair the skin barrier from the damage caused by the sun, overuse of skincare products and other external stressors.

SECRET SKIN'S CLEAN TWIST ON SLUGGING:

We recommend swapping the petroleum jelly from your routine for a nourishing face cream or face oil instead.

WHY:

While it may work well on those with extremely dry skin, petroleum jelly is known to cause clog the pores, lead to breakouts and is considered to be hazardous to the environment since it is not biodegradable. Besides, a great quality face oil or cream has the same, if not better, effect on your skin (sans all the nasties!).

WHO IS IT FOR?

Slugging is typically recommended for those who have dry skin or are exposed to dry conditions, given that a dry environment typically exacerbates transepidermal water loss and and leads to dryness of the skin. Skin that is devoid of moisture will typically soak up all the multilayered nourishment from slugging much faster and give your skin that dose of hydration it needs.

If you have skin that is oily, or more prone to breakouts, we recommend giving this trend a pass.
