Clean Beauty ABC: D is for Dosha - Secret Skin

Clean Beauty ABC: D is for Dosha

According to Ayurveda, doshas are energies or forces that manifest within us. We are made up of a unique combination of the three doshas – vata, pitta and kapha – with one or two taking the primary role and predominance over the other. Recognising our dosha not only helps us gain insights into our lifestyle and diet, but also helps understand our largest organ, the skin, and how to care for it in order to retain balance.

Vata

Vata has air and space as its predominant elements. This skin type is cool to touch (caused by poor circulation) and can be dry, rough or prone to wrinkles and/or rashes and eczema. Given the delicate nature of this skin, it requires most nurturing and warmth. Avoid excessive cleansing and over-drying of the skin by using gentle, moisturising cleansers and skincare laden with essential oils. Rice flour, Milk, Vitamin C, Pomegranate, Chamomile and Rosehip are ingredients to subscribe to to balance out the Vata skin type.

Pitta

With fire and water as its dominant elements, Pitta skin skype is warmer with soft, oily skin as its key tell. Imbalances in pitta skin type cause premature wrinkling, rashes, blackheads, whiteheads, excessive oiliness or even sunburns. This sensitive skin type can be treated with “cooling” ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Sandalwood, Rose, Jojoba, Manuka Honey, Lavender and Chamomile.

Kapha

The Kapha dosha is dominated by water and earth elements making this skin type thick, oily, very light and cool to touch. Imbalanced Kapha reflects on the skin as enlarged pores, acne, pimples and water retention. To nourish Kapha skin types, gentle cleansing and exfoliation is key to keep the pores clean and balance oiliness. Turmeric, Clary Sage, Grapeseed and Tea Tree help regulate acne and other Kapha imbalances.
